Many people ship cars they still owe money on or lease. The transport process is similar to any other vehicle shipment, but the financing agreement may add conditions you should resolve before booking.
This guide is a planning checklist, not an interpretation of your loan or lease. Your agreement and the lender or lessor’s instructions control.
Check the contract before committing
Review the agreement for location restrictions, required insurance, who may possess the vehicle, and any rules for an out-of-state or international move. For a lease, also check the return location, date, mileage, and condition process. If a provision is unclear, ask the lender or lessor for written guidance.
Do not assume a domestic car shipment needs the original title. The broker generally needs accurate vehicle and contact information; a dealer, port, border, or unusual transaction may involve separate documents. Ask which documents are required for your route before transmitting sensitive records.
Keep your insurance and contract obligations in view
Continue to meet any insurance requirements in your financing agreement. Ask your insurer how your policy treats transport and what deductible or exclusions may apply. Separately, ask the transport broker about the assigned carrier’s cargo coverage and the claim process. Those are different questions.
Our insurance and damage-claims guide explains why pickup and delivery condition records matter even when coverage exists.
Name the right handoff contacts
If a dealer, family member, or lease-return facility will handle the car, confirm that they agree to the handoff and will be available during the carrier’s window. Give the broker the correct address, hours, contact, key location, and any release reference. A car cannot be collected just because the owner submitted an online form.
For a leased vehicle being returned, ask the lessor whether delivery to that site completes your obligation or whether it still requires a separate check-in or inspection. Build enough time for that process.
Protect the condition record
Remove personal items, photograph the vehicle, and review the pickup bill of lading. At delivery, compare the car with the pickup record before signing. If a representative receives it, send that person the photos and our delivery inspection checklist.
Transport damage and lease-end wear assessments are different processes. Keep records from both so a later question can be traced to the right handoff.
Before you book
- Check the loan or lease for destination and insurance rules.
- Verify the delivery address and receiving party.
- Ask what documents are needed for this route.
- Keep original title and sensitive records secure.
- Confirm the transport window leaves room for any lease-return appointment.
- Save pickup and delivery inspection documents.
When the requirements are clear, request a car-shipping quote with the correct handoff contacts.
