What the index measures

A planning benchmark, presented without false precision

This edition summarizes the route ranges already maintained by CarShipOS for consumer planning pages. It does not claim to represent every lane, every vehicle, or a transaction-weighted national average.

Important scope Prices assume a running standard vehicle on open transport. They exclude enclosed equipment, expedited pickup, inoperable loading, oversize vehicles, and address-specific access constraints.

Methodology

  1. Start with CarShipOS planning ranges for 32 high-interest directional interstate routes.
  2. Keep the vehicle and service assumptions constant: running, standard-size vehicle, open carrier, normal timing.
  3. Calculate each route midpoint and midpoint per mile, then report medians so one extreme route cannot dominate the summary.
  4. Group routes by planning distance: regional (≤1,200 mi), long distance (1,201–2,000 mi), and cross-country (>2,000 mi).

Is the CarShipOS Auto Transport Rate Index based on booked shipments?+

No. This first edition summarizes CarShipOS planning ranges for 32 representative directional routes. It is an editorial planning dataset, not a transaction-weighted average or a live quote feed.

What kind of vehicle do the price ranges represent?+

Every range assumes one running, standard-size vehicle moving on an open carrier. Larger, inoperable, expedited, enclosed, rural, or seasonally constrained shipments usually cost more.

Why does the per-mile price fall on longer routes?+

Pickup and delivery create fixed work for a carrier. On a longer trip, that work is spread across more miles, so total price increases while the average price per mile commonly declines.

Can I reuse or cite the data?+

Yes. You may cite the index and use the downloadable CSV with attribution to CarShipOS and a link to this page. Do not present the planning ranges as completed-transaction averages.
