Sometimes the moving date is fixed before the new lease closes, the house settles, or a temporary stay turns into a permanent address. You can begin planning car shipping with an approximate destination, but a carrier cannot complete a handoff to “somewhere near town.”
The key is to separate an early planning estimate from the final order that a carrier can actually perform.
Start with what you know
Share the origin, destination city or ZIP code, vehicle, earliest release date, and likely arrival window. Tell the broker plainly that the delivery address is provisional. Ask how long the estimate remains useful and which details must be finalized before carrier assignment.
A ZIP-to-ZIP estimate is a planning tool, not a guarantee. The final street, truck access, and availability can change the work. For price variables, read how much car shipping costs.
Choose a real receiving plan
Options might include a trusted friend or relative, a business willing to receive the vehicle during its hours, or a safe public meeting point near the final address. Confirm permission and access first. Do not list a vacant property or an address where nobody can inspect and sign.
If the delivery contact is not you, give them the pickup condition record and the delivery inspection checklist. They should be authorized to receive keys and document concerns.
Do not assume the truck is storage
Carrier routes have other vehicles and scheduled stops. A delayed apartment handover does not automatically mean the driver can keep the car aboard for days. Ask the broker what happens if you cannot receive it during the agreed delivery window: whether a different contact can accept it, whether lawful storage is available, what it costs, and who arranges onward transport.
Those terms belong in the order before pickup, not in an emergency call after the carrier arrives.
Confirm changes before dispatch
The moment you know the final address, send it with any gate code procedure, business hours, parking constraints, and delivery contact. Ask the broker to verify the location with the carrier. A change across town can be simple; a change to another region or to a restricted building may require a different route, price, or handoff point.
Keep written confirmation of the revised address and terms. Never rely on a text to the driver alone if the broker’s order still names the old destination.
A practical moving checklist
- Label the destination as provisional when asking for an estimate.
- Identify a reachable receiving person and backup.
- Ask how and when the final address must be supplied.
- Check large-truck access or agree on a nearby meeting point.
- Learn the consequences of a missed delivery or storage need.
- Keep the pickup inspection record for the receiving person.
Our pickup-window guide can help you coordinate the vehicle with travel and move-in dates. When you are ready, start a quote and flag the destination as provisional.
